August 2019 —

RSU13 Adult Education instructors and staff welcome you to our program! We would love to work with you to earn your high school diploma, increase your confidence in your reading, writing and math skills, help you find an education or training program that will boost your earning power, help you learn English as a second (or third/fourth/fifth) language and teach you the computer and technology skills you need to succeed!

We partner with UMA-Rockland Center to offer a college success class each semester that will earn you 3 credits if you enroll at UMA. (See the College Transitions section in the course listing!) We work closely with the other Adult Ed programs in the region and refer students to agencies that can assist students with finding and keeping a job. RSU13 Adult Ed is funded by a combination of federal and state grants and local taxpayer funds, so take advantage of the free services that we offer!

Call 594-9764 to make an appointment and learn more about how RSU13 Adult Ed can help you take a positive step forward in your life!

Profile of an Adult Education HiSET Graduate

Dakota Elwell enrolled with RSU13 Adult Education in January, and spent his fishing off-season making steady progress through all five High School Equivalency Tests (HiSET). Dakota was a regular presence in the Learning Center, coming in several times a week to study, to take practice exams, and to sit for the official HiSET tests in our testing center. As the weather warmed up and the summer lobster season grew closer, he ramped up his attendance even further and devoted many hours to mastering the math concepts and writing skills he needed for his final two tests. He worked closely with RSU13 Adult Education volunteer math tutor, Peter Harrison. Dakota said, “Math turned out to be my favorite subject; it was actually kind of fun. I enjoyed working with Peter.” Dakota finished his final HiSET exam on June 20, and graduated with his Maine State High School Equivalency Diploma. He reports that he “feels a sense of accomplishment” by passing all of the tests and jokes that his wife was the driving force behind him completing his diploma. He plans to continue fishing, but is glad to have his diploma in his back pocket if his plans change down the road. He says that he was very satisfied with his overall experience at RSU13 Adult Education and hopes that others will pursue their diplomas with the program.

We are your local HiSET Test Center

RSU13 Adult & Community Education is the HiSET Testing Center for Rockland, Thomaston, South Thomaston, Cushing, and Owls Head.  Additionally, we offer testing and test preparation services at no charge to any Maine resident that is enrolled in our program regardless of their current address. Call or email today to find out more about the HiSET program. Other area Adult & Community Education HiSET Test Centers are at FiveTowns CSD and Meadomak Valley High School.

What’s the difference between GED and HiSET?

The Maine Department of Education has replaced GED brand tests with the High School Equivalency Test (HiSET) to provide students with a High School Equivalency Diploma. The GED is no longer offered in Maine. The HiSET exam covers the same academic content areas as the GED and is offered at no cost to Maine residents. Students take five separate exams that comprise the HiSET: Math, Reading, Writing, Social Studies, and Science. Passing all five exams will earn a student their High School Equivalency Diploma. One-to-one tutoring and testing is available in our Adult Learning Center with certified teachers and skilled tutors. Call 594-9764 for more information on how to get started.
